What is the keeps?

Keeps were fortified towers often found in medieval castles and fortresses. They were typically located near the center of a castle and were used as a last line of defense in case the outer walls and gates were breached.

Keeps were also known as donjons and were often the tallest and strongest part of the castle. They were typically built square or rectangular, with walls that could be several feet thick, and featured narrow windows and doorways that made it difficult for attackers to enter.

Inside the keep, there would be multiple levels, with the topmost often serving as a lookout tower or housing living quarters for the lord and his family. Lower levels could be used as storage spaces or barracks for soldiers.

Keeps were a key feature of castle fortifications in the medieval period, and many examples can still be seen today in the form of ruins or restored structures.
